你應知道的英文成語 : (5) Every cloud has a silver lining

意思 : 天無絕人之路, 每年懷事總伴隨著好的事, 這句可用來鼓勵那些正面對困難又失去正面態度的人。

silver lining是銀色的邊, 在雲中出現銀色的光芒, 就有如在黑暗中出現曙光,就如路上縱有錯敗, 也會有好事發生。

這句英文諺語來自英國詩人及思想家約翰·密爾頓(John Milton )在1634年的寫下 Comus: A 

Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle

節錄如下:

To keep my life and honour unassailed.
Was I deceived, or did a sable cloud
Turn forth her silver lining on the night?
I did not err; there does a sable cloud

Milton常在文學作品中用到「雲」(clouds)與「銀色的直線」(silver lining)作比喻，並後來在英國維多利亞時期中廣泛使用 ，並做就這句every cloud has q silver lining,並沿用至今。

第一次出現這句子的是都柏林雜誌(The Dublin Magazine) 1840年 第一卷評論Mrs S Hall 小說Marian 或 a Young Maid's Fortunes,就提到以下句子

katty Macane 擁有它「雲總有一線曙光，只要我們看見，就會見到雲在天堂上」

As Katty Macane has it, "there's a silver lining to every cloud that sails about the heavens if we could only see it."

新聞常用「silver lining」一字比如初現曙光, 比如Wsj.com 其中一篇博客的標題如下:Rolls-Royce’s Cloudy Outlook Comes With Silver Lining, 文中指雖然Rolls Royce的主席表示今年公司生意沒有驚喜卻生意不俗, 投資者仍可對Rolls Royce抱有觀望態度。
